Out of the Darkness

Updated: Nov 2, 2023

It was 43 years ago that life changed. Forever. It would never be the same again. My dad took his life. December 3, 1980. It was an honor to raise money and walk in the Rochester (MN) Out of the Darkness Walk for suicide prevention on October 7, 2023. Over 300 walkers showed up on chilly morning to honor loved ones lost and remember them in a special way.

Even Remi joined us on the walk to honor the great-grandpa that he never met. And my brother, Gordy.

In December 1980, less than a week after my dad took his life, this poem appeared in the local newspaper. Back when newspapers were still a thing and worth reading.

Sad and lonely days have passed Since our great sorrow fell. The shock that we received that day, No one can ever tell. God gave us strength to meet it, And courage to bear the blow, But what it means to lose you, No one will ever know. It’s lonely here without you, We miss you more each day, For life is not the same to us, Since you were called away. You bid no one a last farewell, Not even said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. In Loving Memory of Dad,

Rodney Jay Kallis (Author Unknown)

It was the perfect words at the right time. Miss you, dad. Every day. In every way.
